Regulatory requirement

Climate risk and vulnerability analysis with K.A.R.L.® TAXO

The man-made increase in greenhouse gases is causing global climate change, which is manifesting itself in extreme weather events (e.g., heavy rain, violent storms) but also through gradual changes (e.g., rising temperatures or less precipitation). The consequences of climate change are already manifold today and affect society as a whole. In response, the EU adopted the Green Deal in 2020. K.A.R.L.® helps companies meet growing regulatory requirements, such as those under the EU taxonomy or the CSRD. Our analyses are a decisive advantage, especially for financial service providers and internationally active companies.

Basis for certifications

Climate risk and vulnerability analysis

Assessing climate-related risks is a crucial step in determining the taxonomy compliance of an economic activity. It serves both to fulfill the “do no significant harm” criterion and as proof that a significant contribution has been made to environmental objective 2. K.A.R.L.®-TAXO provides an object- and location-specific climate risk analysis for all natural hazards, which not only meets the requirements of the EU taxonomy, but also forms a solid basis for further ESG certifications. This is done using a four-stage classification system: no relevant, low, medium, or high risk. The assessment takes into account not only current climate conditions, but also various future climate scenarios. In addition to the risk classification, users receive the relevant data (e.g., precipitation and temperature data) for further use. The current focus is on analyzing different types of real estate properties. In principle, however, the analyses can also be adapted to other properties such as production facilities, industrial sites, or renewable energy plants (e.g., wind turbines, solar plants).

Planning basis for adaptation measures

Based on the results of the analysis, targeted adaptation measures can be planned and implemented if material risks have been identified. Even outside the taxonomy context, the analysis can serve as a basis for systematic management of physical climate risks. Adaptation measures are part of the requirements of climate protection goal 2, but are not currently provided automatically by our analysis tool. If required, we can refer you to a partner company that plans adaptation measures specifically for the significant risks and in line with your property.

Special features at a glance

Natural hazards

All natural and climate hazards required by the EU are analyzed.

Time periods

Current climate projections (CMIP6) are evaluated for short-, medium-, and long-term time periods.

Scenarios

The selected climate projections are based on the scenarios required by the EU taxonomy for the future development of greenhouse gas emissions (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP5-8.5).

Locations

Analyses can be performed for individual locations (results in a detailed report) and for portfolios of any size (results in a clear Excel table).

Languages

Results reports are available in German and English.

Methods

Risk assessment is carried out using scientific methods, which are explained to our customers in a user manual.

Legal requirements

KA’s climate risk assessment is based on the legal requirements of the EU taxonomy (Delegated Regulation 2021/2139, Annex II) and the guidelines issued by the German Federal Environment Agency for preparing a legally compliant climate risk and vulnerability assessment.
